Currently there are two Zambians and one Irishman in the Christian Brothers Community in Mufulira and they are involved in a number of projects in the local community.
Chibolya Community School
Brothers Lubasi and Egidious work here and we also pay teachers, supply books and have been working to provide better sanitary conditions. At present the school has about 370 pupils (primary level). They usually do very well in their grade 7 tests and continue their schooling at second level.
Murundu Development Centre
Mr. Liberty Lungo runs this centre for those who have left school early. Murundu is a large rural village some 15KM from Mufulira and has a population of about 12,000 people many of whom are very poor. Students, numbering 110, receive training in metalwork, carpentry, building, agriculture and motor mechanics. The centre also has an extensive production unit to help raise funds.
This is co-ordinated by Br. Michael in 3 different locations. We grow maize during the rainy season and vegetable under irrigation during the dry season. The maize is used to give porridge daily to our trainees, to feed their families and the remainder is used in our feed programme.
We help feed 130 families in Murundu and another 70 families in Mufulira. They get mealie meal, salt, sugar, beans, cooking oil and a bar of soap. Many are elderly – some living alone, others trying to support their grand-children. We have a special feeding programme in Murundu for mothers and vulnerable babies.
Houses for the elderly poor
We have completed the building of 45 small houses near Murundu village. There are showers, meeting room, and electricity.
Houses for Medics
This is an effort to improve facilities at the clinics by providing houses for the medical personnel, also maternity units and water facilities in conjunction with the WaSH programme.
This is a water, Sanitation and Hygiene project that is now complete for 9 schools, mostly rural, in the Mufulira area. Facilities include boreholes, pumps, showers, wash-hand basins and drinking water
Br. Michael has a roving commission throughout Zambia to support other Brothers Communities in implementing projects for the benefit of the poor as decided by the local community. He is also working on raising funds and ensuring good accountability and reporting following receipt of grants and donations.
Houses for Teachers
This project will start soon and the aim is to provide solar facilities for the teachers who work in remote rural communities outside Murundu.
This is amazing work being undertaken by 3 Christian Brothers, for the benefit of local communities, in one area of Zambia and if you wish to contribute to their projects please contact Edmund Rice Development below.
